East & West
Ceramic sculpture
East and West is a ceramic sculpture made entirely from clay intertwined with digital art and is inspired by Only Breath, a poem by Jalal-Al-Din Rumi

The sculpture resembles an exploded missile against concrete and draws from the concept of الصندوق السحري “The Magic Box” and invites viewers to have a closer look and marvel at what's hidden inside.

"I am not from the East or the West, not out of the ocean or up from the ground. Not natural or ethereal, not composed of elements at all. I do not exist, am not an entity in this world or in the next, did not descend from Adam and Eve or any origin story. My place is placeless, a trace of the traceless. Neither body nor soul. I belong to the beloved, have seen the two worlds as one and that one call to and know, first, last, outer, inner, only that breath-breathing human being."
Jalal-Al-Din Rumi

The pieces of this sculpture are layered on top of each other, starting with screen then the second piece of ceramic that reads "West" in Latin letters, topped with the third that reads "East" in Arabic letters.

The two structures dance between imagery of flowers and footage from war, communicating the need for peace between these two worlds.
