SCARS
«Scars» is a project about traumas.
It's about why grandmother got so angry when we didn't want to finish lunch or why they said, «to stay humbler than the dust». This project brings together six key stories of my family from generation to generation, starting from the 20th century. Similar stories exist in every family, and with this project, I want to demonstrate how important it is to remember and talk about them.
Part 1. Horseshoe
It all started with the story of my great-great-grandfather. He lived with his family in the village of Danilovka in the Luhansk region almost a hundred years ago. In his childhood, he used to herd horses, one of which stepped on his foot. The scar from the horseshoe remained for his entire life. His family had their own farm, which they lost after the Bolsheviks came to power. Ivan was put in a cart and taken to prison. My grandmother regularly brought him food. The last time, after the guards took the bag with the supplies, my grandmother saw dead bodies being carried out of the prison. From under a sheet on a stretcher, a foot protruded, and on it was that very scar from the horseshoe.
Nearly a century after this story, my grandfather told me it and cried. I decided to turn it into an artwork. After that, "Scars" came into being.
Part 2. Cigarettes
I am leaving and taking a pack of cigarettes with me. My great-grandfather was smoking them when a shell landed next to him.
Part 3. Pincushion
I am leaving and taking needles and threads with me. They helped my great-grandmother feed her three daughters after her husband died in the war.
Part 4. Sugar bowl
I am leaving and taking the sugar bowl with me. It was on the table when my grandmother's relatives were deciding which of them she would live with, and ultimately decided that she would go to an orphanage.
Part 5. Dress
I am leaving and taking my mother’s dress with me. Mom didn’t like it at all, but she had nothing else to wear on a date with dad.
Part 6. Suitecase
Everyone has such a suitcase. I put it all in it and leave.

Thank you!
