Book Covers for a Music Theory Series
This project comes from a Graphic Systems and Structures course in which the focus was on using form to create a visually interesting composition with the principles of Gestalt.
This book cover series uses form to demonstrate the Gestalt principles of proximity, continuation, similarity and figure-ground relationships. The form throughout these pieces was created from my photograph of a winding stairwell in Boston. The project assignment first called for the study and exploration of forms, and only then were we to derived meaning from it to further our compositions as book covers. Once I had created my form as vector, I chose the subject of my book covers to be about music theory. Like music, the forms have both structural and organic qualities that create an interesting composition. The forms take on the appearance of one continuous piece winding through the spreads, creating the illusion of depth.
