Google Translate Icon

An ancient metaphor based icon for Google Translate, designed from scratch. As always my style in this icon series is to simplify things to a certain extent, and this is no different. The original image had more segments, but I chose my layout of the segments based on the final 120px canvas, and the obvious size restrictions. All work was was scaled up for the screen shots, from the original 120px canvas. The idea is to have a 100% vector glyph, that can be easily scaled to the 152px iPad canvas.

The shapes that make up the icon are constructed in Illustrator. The main body outline is freehand drawn. Then I draw lines and add a stroke to expand them into vector shapes that I've used to cut the segments out of the main body. Below you can see the basic shapes coming together in Illustrator.

Below you can see the shapes have been imported to PhotoShop, and the icon is in the last stages of design. I had to play around with layer effects a lot, as my original faded "ancient" look didn't provide enough contrast for use on the iPhone screen. Layers are in the process of being intuitively named, to allow a more compact layer panel. The main window shows the "@2x" smart object, which is nested inside the main template below. The lower inset window is the final 120 pixel icon, and shown at 100% zoom.

The icon is part of my "3 4 All" theme, available FREE for iPhone and iPad retina. It's designed to bring subtle depth, a variety of different metaphor based icons, and a unique twist to glyph based alternate icons. Thank you.
