2024 NASA Science Calendar

2024 NASA Science Calendar and Key Artwork

The 2024 NASA Science Calendar was inspired by the Heliophysics Big Year, which began with the annular eclipse across North America this past October and will continue with the upcoming total solar eclipse in April of 2024. The goal of this composition was to capture a frozen moment in time, as the young woman basks in the beauty of an eclipse, which will not recur (in the same location) for hundreds of years.

This theme afforded me the opportunity to play around with some fun color combinations – using an autumn color pallet to provide contrast between the orange trees, green grass, and dusky purples and blues in the sky. The milky way leads the eye across the composition from the young woman to the Eclipse in the upper right. Hot air balloons float in the distance, inspired by the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, which took place during the annular eclipse earlier this year. Animals emerge to investigate the sudden onset of night – including an owl, possum, rabbit, bat, raccoon, squirrel, deer and fox.

Artwork was created by compositing photographic and illustrated elements, including a custom headshot of the young woman.

Inside Spread Artwork

The artwork for the inside spread was designed to complement the "Through the eyes of NASA" tagline, which is being used for 2023 and 2024 NASA eclipse branding. The total solar eclipse, surrounded by wispy clouds, resembles a large eye in the sky. Artwork was created by compositing photographic and illustrated elements.
