Instructional Book Design
/ Climb On
"Climb On" was a creative challenge that combined research and writing, brand-creation, illustration, page layout, and my own personal interests to design every element of an instructional book on rock climbing.
OVERVIEW
GROUNDWORK / LOGO
I began by brainstorming words surrounding climbing and sketched ideas for the logo which would be the foundation for my design.
Inspired by both the hexagonal geometry of the indoor climbing walls and the intensity of outdoor sport climbing, I combined the two in my final logo design. I considered the use of negative space and attempted to communicate the skill and dynamism of climbing in
my illustrated design.
LAYOUT
After spending time researching the different climbing methods I was going to address, I began forming the layout for the spreads. Because I was planning to create two-page background illustrations for each spread, it was important that I get this part right so that I didn't have to start anything over.
TYPOGRAPHY
I knew that I wanted to maintain the gym-inspired geometric theme throughout my book so I took it into consideration while choosing fonts, landing on two geometric font families to use throughout the book layout.
DETAILS
As I wrote the content, I developed a set of smaller illustrations to visually assist the text, illustrating each by hand using Procreate. The larger illustrations on the spreads were done using Adobe illustrator.
