Storyboarding and Character Design

Designing characters and storyboarding for a feature film project is one of a unique projects I worked on recently. From designing the characters, defining their features aligning with the script and maintaining them throughout the storyboard sketches is definitely a handful of task but, there's where the fun is!
Above is the protagonist, according to the film script this character goes through a rough patch which leaves a huge differences in his character traits and looks. Thus, I worked on his three different phases, which gives an idea of how he would look in each of the character transitions.
Followed by the character designs, it was time to create the storyboard sketches. The basic requirements of the project was focused on my prevalent areas of expertise, which are drawing humans, setting up dramatic scene as per the script, and I added my very own favourite ingredient “lighting” like a cherry on top to tell the story through the illustration! It was indeed a wholesome experience!
One of the main skill set that comes handy while illustrating storyboards is the concept of “Perspective Drawing”, a basic understanding of how perspective works will help in visualising and staging the characters so well that you can clearly tell what’s happening in the scene already! This was one such board where the intensity of the scene can be felt and understood that “this guy is about to get busted”
There was a time when I struggled a little bit to draw multiple characters in single frame. You know, you have to follow the human anatomical proportions, character arrangements according to the perspective that matches scene settings. It’s too much to handle such complicated art concepts in one go.

But, when I was sketching out this board, the process was smooth! I bet it’s because of all the sketchbook practices I did in the past. I thank myself for doing so.

It’s a realisation that the efforts we put in will compound itself overtime and with patience we definitely can see the results! ;)
This is one crazy board to work on. Ever since I got to know the intensity of this action sequence of the story plot, I knew I’m going to have a blast of an experience illustrating it!
The combat situation is happening in a chicken coop, guns are fired, chicken panicking causing chaos! etc, making this one highly intense looking board!

Predominately, almost all the time I’ve been known as an illustrator who draws cute things, but drawing gang fights, blood and sweat scenes, feels new and I like it for some reason!
