A Real Realist
by Annika Cowen
30x42 inch oil painting of my beloved dog, Kasper, completed in 2023.

The poem is an excerpt from Dog by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Painting Stages
I started with colored washes to map stuff out using a photo reference. I spent a lot of time on the water because I had never painted something like that before. It was quite a challenge and I may or may not regret covering it up with the poem. After that, I went onto the rocks, and I saved Kasper for last. I kept things mostly true to how they were in the photograph, only changing colors and placement for minor aesthetic purposes. The blue on the floatie is more vivid in the photograph, but I muted the blue to make the dog stand out the most. I paint very loosely, so most of my paintings take on a painterly quality. I hope to be able to tighten up on details better in future paintings, but maintain that painterly quality.

Photo Reference
A moment in time where I tried to get my dog to enjoy the pool on a hot summer day at my boyfriend's parents' house. He may look like he's smiling in this picture, but he absolutely despised being wet and jumped off the board to swim out of the pool soon after this picture was taken. He does in fact have a real tale to tell and a real tail to tell it with.
