The Mr. Brute series had just been abandoned. The format of dual portraits presented as 50/50 split screen was continued in the rebooted version. One of the key characters in Mr. Brute was a 1962 Fighting Space Man Robot made in Horikawa Japan I wanted a character like that …. But something self-created.

My collection of candy cane boxes features the craftwork that goes into the protection and presentation of candy canes. The goal of the packaging is unique and involves die cuts; volumetric shaping through folds and well-placed printing. I decided to focus on the transformation of the packaging into a robot.

I wanted to use silver leaf in the series, but I needed a way to leaf large areas without the money drain, in fact I didn’t even want to see seems in long fields of foiling. The answer was aluminum foil… the kind that’s in your kitchen. Use stick glue in the area to adhere, cotton balls to burnish the foil on It’s a dead ringer for precious metal leafing.
The packaging reminded me of Lisa Simpson so it was easy to anchor the head. It was challenging to go full speed evolving the packaging with taking over the right-hand side but had to stay disciplined and simple. Only the robot should grow I pulled in the three-column slot machine display. It brings another layer of personality display.
