The Memory Keeper - Film Poster

The Memory Keeper is a short film by my friend and colleague Kathryn Morrin, who I got to know over a series of swordfights last year. Katy is an extremely capable and collected person, and the logistics of directing a film seem to come naturally to her. It has been a joy to work with her on this project, especially since the Memory Keeper is such a moving film.

I was contracted to produce a theatrical poster and a logomark on a short deadline. I was fortunate to have an exquisite candid photo of the actors (photo credit Riley Atkinson) to work from. I began the process with basic color-correction and touch-up to make the photo suit my vision for the poster. Specifically, I increased exposure, reduced color temperature everywhere except for skin tones, desaturated and blurred the background, and exaggerated the texture to enhance the intimacy of the photo.

Most of my time was spent on typography. I've never made a movie poster before, so fulfilling the requirements for a billing block (the credits at the bottom) was a delightful, albeit bewildering, challenge. The font used is Bernard MT Condensed. Don't get me started on drop shadows and skrims, I spent hours tweaking them.

My pride and joy is, unsurprisingly, the titling, which is based on my own hand-lettering. I took my sketches and traced them with vectors in Illustrator to produce the final graphic, which became the logo of the film.
