Objectives
This project is a redesign of a classic publication, Wildflowers of America, edited by H.W. Rickett. Though originally published in 1953 by the Smithsonian, the last updated edition was released in 1987. Envisioning a cover refresh and special 60th anniversary publication, this cover updates the hard cover design and expands an advertising campaign.
Solution
Building in Adobe Photoshop, illustrative flower designs, with a hand drawn and vintage feel, were featured on front and back covers to create a beautiful engaging cover. Designed as an 8" x 12" format to provide ample room for the enclosed illustrative prints, while remaining portable and hand-friendly. Gioviale serif, chosen it's calligraphy feel and elegant tails, graced the cover and titles of back, while Cochin typeface was utilized for body text due to it's readability and pleasant style.
