Persefont Variable Display Typeface

My display typography is called Persefont, and this name stems from its storytelling. It’s based on the myth of the abduction of Persephone.

Persephone was the only daughter of Demeter, goddess of agriculture. As she grew up, her uncle Hades, god of the underworld, became determined to possess her, so he abducted her one day while Persephone was picking a narcissus flower.
Demeter searched tirelessly for her and renounced her divinity until Hades returned her. Demeter’s presence among mortals made the land barren, so Zeus demanded Persephone’s return. Hades agreed on the condition that Persephone would remain fasting until she left the underworld. To tempt her, he lined the path with red and succulent pomegranates, and the young girl fell into the trap.

The gods reached an agreement: each year Persephone must spend six months with Demeter and six months in the underworld. During her absence, Demeter abandons her divine duties, and the earth does not bear fruit, thus giving what we know as winter.
Knowing this story, we can understand the reason for its shape. The typography only features lowercase characters, including numbers, punctuation marks, symbols, accents, and a set of icons that align with its history.

In its rounded weight, as its name suggests, it is based on rounded shapes, although not a perfect circle, it tends more towards a square. Its strokes are quite wide, and it has very small counterspaces. It does not have very sharp shapes, giving it a friendlier, more natural, and closer appearance, much more human as a whole. Worthy of representing mortals. Its shapes refer to the spring and summer seasons, in which Persephone spends with her mother Demeter.

At the other end is its other weight, square, which takes the rounded shapes of the previous one and transforms them into straight lines and square shapes. Its strokes and counterspaces remain the same as the rounded one, only this time they do not present curves. Much colder and more distant, but with personality, which gives it the curiosity generated by the underworld. Its shapes refer to the autumn and winter seasons, in which Persephone spends with her uncle Hades, and Demeter gives up caring for the earth.
It has several intermediate weights that show the transition from round to square, these being semi-rounded, medium, and semi-square. The typeface supports about 23 languages.

Among its icons are a leaf representing Demeter, a skull for Hades, and a pomegranate for Persephone. There are also several faces with different expressions to be able to show your feelings. In addition, there is a sun, a cloud, a star, a heart, and a sparkle, among others.
