ERI SILK (PEACE SILK)
About the craft:

Eri silk is probably the most different type of silk available in the market. The white silk is often referred to as the fabric of peace when it is processed without killing the silkworm. This process results in a silk called Ahimsa silk/Peace silk. Eri Silk comes from the worm samia cynthia ricini. Moths leave the cocoon and then the cocoons are harvested to be spun. The name "eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", which means "castor". The silkworm feeds on castor plants. It is found mainly in Assam & North East India.
It is a staple fibre, unlike other silks, which are continuous filament. The texture of the fabric is coarse, fine, and dense. It is very strong, durable, and elastic. Peace silk is darker and heavier than other silks and blends well with wools and cotton. Due to its thermal properties it is warm in winter and cool in summer.

Process:

- It comes from cocoon of Samia Cynthia Ricini silkworm which feeds on castor plant.
- Cocoon is open-ended & moth flies out once matured, no worms are killed in the making.
- Cocoons are then boiled. Process is called degumming.
- It is then dried and spun to make Eri silk yarn.
- Yarn is then dyed & woven in a loom to make Eri silk fabric.

Problem Identification:

PROBLEM
As silk is considered violent in nature, many communities doesn’t wear
or use it. Eri silk being non-violent in nature can cater to these communities.

SOLUTION
Design intervention by designing campaign for Eri silk artisans,
weavers and cocoon rearers. Marketing strategies for promoting peaceful silk to
specific communities. Educating them about different types of silk and Eri silk
specifications.

Methodology:
The primary and secondary source of research was through websites, blogs, articles.
