FINAL OUTCOME ONE - Screen printing, concertina book
For one of my final outcomes I have chosen to create five concertina books using screen prints. I have picked these 5 images that show the transformation of this tulip and I will create a series of images showing how the ink fades and starts to dry as you print if no extra ink is added - showing how the screen print is transforming and becoming less clear.
I started by editing these photographs by using the dodge and burn tool to illuminate the highlights and shadows to make the contrast of the image more clear.
I also changed the images to grey scale as this is necessary when screen printing.

I also added a colour half tone which is how the dots are created. I made them A6.
These are the screenprints ready to be printed onto the silk screen.
The process:
These are some images showing how I created the screen prints - showing how a used masking tape to set up where the paper was so that it matched up to the stencil. I then used a squeegee to print, I used a small one so that it would fit well onto the small stencils. I used parcel tape to mark out the stencil so that it wouldn't get onto the surrounding areas our onto the other prints.
I did this process continually until I was happy with the outcomes and I had a series of images clearly showing the transformation.
Book Making:
After printing the screen prints I let them dry and then scanned them in on the printer, creating digital copies of the prints.

I then used guides and rulers to make a template that is the right size for the book (A4), and changed the sizes of them images accordingly making sure the sizes and positioning of each flower is identical to the next so that the book would look well made.
After printing the books onto card I began making them/cutting them and I realised that I had put the last two images the wrong way round so I had to go back, change them and reprint which did waste dome of my time and was definitely I problem that I faced during Day 3 of my exam.
I also created a front and back cover for the books, I did this by measuring 1cm around the finished book and creating a simple cover for each one with the number of the images. I like this design as it doesn't take way from the prints inside. I wanted to do it in black as I printed onto white paper and thought it might be a nice contrast.
Process:
I started off my measuring out where I need to score so that all the boxes are the same size and I can attach them together.

I then scored the necessary lines using the back of a scalpel and cutting mat. I then cut through the middle.
I then cut off the extra box as I only needed space for 5 images and then using double sided sellotape I attached both sides together creating the concertina, I also made sure that the scores went through enough to create a clean fold.
Then I cut out the front/back covers and measured them to find the middle and then create a spine. I then glued the concertina to the cover. I then decided to create small clasps to go onto the booking so that they can close and don't stay wide open the whole time. I did this by using thin stripes and card and glueing them on the back, then making. small slit on the front cover, making it fold in easily.
FINAL OUTCOMES
These are the final outcomes and I'm very happy with the way they turned out.
I think they all fit really well together and I think it's nice how they all match and fit together as a set.
