The theme of the Spoonflower challenge was called “Geodes and Gemstones.” My main inspiration for the pattern were gemstones and their unique appearance after being carved a certain shape. The cuts I became interested in portraying are the heart cut gems and the princess cut gems. Deciding the color palette was a task filled with lots of tests until the final swatch and the repeated pattern looked satisfactory.

Looking at the colors of the original swatch and Pallette (a), I am reminded of Disney princesses and the colors often used in items marketed towards young girls. Pink is the most popular color, but also hues of purple and yellow are used. There is a sweetness produced by this combination of colors and gemstones which could describe many of Disney’s princesses I have admired for so long.

Pallette (b) is very similar to “mixed berries.” The red heart gems are shaped and colored similarly to strawberries that it helps support the allusion of fruit with the pallette. Also the few pink gems that are distributed in the pattern adds a slight sugary feeling within the pattern. Like most strawberry candy is not red like the actual fruit but ranges of pink.

Pallette (c) appears designated for Valentine’s Day. The brown gems could represent chocolates in different forms and like the pattern discussed above, the red gems can be strawberries. This time I believe the yellow gems are adding the sweet appeal to the pattern as I think of candied lemons when I look at them.
