LISTEN TO THE MOUNTAIN - TEXTILE INTERN - AVANI,KUMAON.

To develop livelihood programs based on appropriate technology, renewable energy, traditional craft, local resources, and provide health and education services through community based management systems and provide training and capacity building for dissemination.
 
Using local resources, traditional kumaoni skills to create local livelihood opportunities for a joyful community life & bringing natural resources, people and design in full harmony to bring them to the contemporary market. Avani consists of 5 livelihood centre spreaded in Pithoragarh district & Chankana is one of them.

2 months of my working in Chankana, broadly desicribe as capasity building of the centre through creative motivation and exlopring more handloom possibilities in wool, silk, and linen as a new material for fabrics and Sarees. Also looking after production planning, exhibitions and waste managment of Avani Garment production.
PROJECT 1: MARINO - ERI STOLES & SHAWLS
 
This is an block drafted warp mixed marino wool & eri silk, inspired from Backstrap weaving effects to create floats in warp. The look is seaweed textured allover the surface. Made on a 4 shaft hand loom in a small village called Chankana, Uttaranchal.
PROJECT 2: LINEN FABRIC FOR SUMMER
 
Linen 2/44s white warp weaved by coloured weft in different density by plying. Various drafting possible in 4-shaft handloom are tried to increase weavers design vocabulary and exploring linen as a new material. Beautiful & rich natural dyes worked in weft to create a earthy vibrant nutral fabric line for summer range.
WARP EXPLORATION 1: Warp of 2/44s undyed linen, Straight drafting, maximum weft domination, different density of fabric explored, lusturous & smooth drape.WARP
WARP EXPLORATION 2: warp density increased double, sturdy look & feel, compact weave, beautiful lusture, weft colour interaction & 2 ply exploration.
 
WARP EXPLORATION 3: colour warp of 2/44s, colour interaction & combinations.
 
WARP EXPLORATION 4: full width (48"), undyed 2/44s linen warp, 6 different drafting, 6 different denting, density exploration both warp & weft combination.
Laptop Sleeve : Recycled Tibetan wool fabric production waste, patch worked.
Coasters: Fabric waste management.
