Titanic

In 1996 I was one of the model makers pictured above with one of our creations for the James Cameron film, "Titanic."  I was part of this project while working for Digital Domain.

This section is a work in progress as I select, scan, size, and retouch many of the photos taken during that project as we were working on the miniatures. This particular miniature is the beauty model and was used for all shots of the ship sailing on the ocean. In many of the shots it is the only non-digital item in the shot. It is 1/20th scale placing its length at about 45 feet, and was constructed by using the plans from Harland and Wolff Shipyards.

In case you are wondering, I am the one wearing the light grey, short-sleeve t shirt kneeling next to the girls in the front row.
Beauty Model

Here is a closer view of the same model. Any view of the ship sailing on the ocean in the film was this model. In many shots it was the only thing that was actually photographed as all other elements were digital.
Building the Beauty Model

View from the same side of the model, earlier in the construction process. Here you can see some of the over 300,000 brass brads that we hammered into the model to simulate the rivets.
