Maatjies Hoek is a human centred design project that I completed as part of my final year at Stellenbosch University. I colaborated with a student run initiative called Make it Positive, working with grade eight and nine learners at Stellenzicht Senior Secondary school.
The project focused on design as a creative problem solving tool. The process was to be inclusive and took the form of a design thinking workshop, where the students identified challenges in their school and sought a creative solution to overcome it.
The following design challenge was identified within the workshop:
"How could a learner of Stellenzicht make better friends?"
As a creative solution to the design challenge,
we created a positive space encouraging friendship amongst the students of Stellenzicht.
The painting of the mural, narrative of the illustration and integration of sports activities all added to a new and changing environment lead by the students of Stellenzicht.
