The coffee mug is a portable object that is functional and timeless - document an artwork and place the image on a coffee mug and you have a portable gallery that is still functional and still timeless - have the creator of the artwork on the coffee mug drink coffee from the coffee mug and you now have an original artwork altered by the artist's hand (or mouth, tongue, etc.) that is portable, functional, and timeless.
Van Gogh, Munch, and O'Keefe have their works on coffee mugs and they are thought of as "kitsch" artists, their work has fallen out of favor with those "in good taste" and has been taken up those who are not. Work that is no longer Avant-Garde or on the cutting edge ends up on coffee mugs, but maybe by
