The motive of a musician is to perform a composition in a manner that is true to to the composer's intension. Every musical notation, dynamic, tempo, phrase, and musical sentence needs to be considered in the interpretation so that the performance becomes a representation of the writer. It may take hours, days, months, or even years to perfect a performance so it is true to what is written. Is this because we yearn to be close to the composer? Close enough to hear their thoughts? Or is it just easier to focus on them than it is to focus on ourselves? The musician puts in just as much time and effort. Have we forgotten to let ourselves speak too?
