Title:  Dolce
Year:  2012
Dimensions: 4” X 5”
Medium: CarbOthello Chalk-pastel coloring pencils on sandpaper
Description:  This piece is a portrait of my friend Becky playing the guitar.  The vibrant colors selected to express her face illustrate her love and passion for the music that she creates - hence the title “dolce” which is a musical term meaning lovingly or sweetly.
Title:  A Stage Presence (A Self Portrait)
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  30” X 44”
Medium:  Chalk Pastels and Charcoal
Description:  The concept of the subject interacting with her audience was the inspiration for this piece.  By selecting this aggressive pose, with the violin and bow aimed directly towards the audience, the viewer feels a strong connection with the subject.  The choice of  the dramatic lighting reinforces the idea of a passionate and a direct performance.  The lighting also suggests that performers may become different people when they take the stage.  The audience can identify who the performer pretends to be and subsequently seek to determine who they really are.  The color of the musical instrument highlights the passionate sounds which emerge.   The eye depicts a penetrating connection between the performer and the audience - in a way virtually peering into someone’s soul.
Title:  Practice Makes Perfect
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  19” X 14”
Medium:  Black and White Charcoal
Description:  This piece depicts a young boy (my brother) playing his violin for pleasure.  The dramatic lighting suggests that when practicing you are preparing for a future performance, as if you are already on stage.  As a musician  masters the piece he begins to understand the meaning and story that follows, all the while visualizing the performance to come.
Title:  Just Dance
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  20” X  25 ½”
Medium:  Chalk Pastels
Description:  This is a parody of Manet’s self portrait.  He is seen to be dancing and enjoying life in stark contrast with his very serious image in his 1865/66 portrait.  The assignment was part of the summer program at SAIC and involved choosing a piece from the Chicago Art Museum.   I completed this work in about four hours.
Title: Passion (Self Portrait)
Year: 2011
Dimensions: 19 ½”X 15 ½”
Medium: Black and white charcoal
Description: A two-dimensional charcoal portrait of myself playing my violin.  The aspect that I enjoy most of this piece is the angle by which the subject is viewed.  It shows the subject from the perspective that an audience might see looking up at the stage from the front row seats - or possibly  as a young child might look up to his or her idle.

This piece won a Scholastic Gold Key in 2011
Title:  Dress-up
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  13” X 10”
Medium:   Black and white charcoal
Description:  This piece shows a young girl playing dress up who imagines herself as a fashion model on a catwalk.  This is all about children’s imaginations and what they dream of becoming when they grow up.  The audience/critics watch her intently as she prepares for the future.
Title:  Becoming the Music
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  16” X 21”
Medium:  Sheet music collage, and ink
Description:  This artistic rendering illustrates my friend playing his saxophone.  The image is painted on top of collaged sheet music and symbolizes the concentration required to play such a piece.  After practice, hard work and dedication you in a sense become part of the music.
Title: Resting in Peace
Year: 2012
Dimensions: 20” X  25 ½”
Medium: Black and White Soft Pastel
Description:  An illustration of a young woman lying on a bed of sheets with a skeleton.  This piece was done over the summer at the Art Institute of Chicago for the Early College Program.  It was completed as a still life for the Figure Drawing class.   It was composed in about thirty (30) minutes and was particularly challenging for me due to the quick pace. Normally my work consists of detailed  compositions that often require hours of concentrated effort. This took me a little out of my comfort zone and in the end was very rewarding.
Title:  Rest and Relaxation
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  25 ½” X  39”
Medium:  Earth Toned Chalk- Pastels
Description:  A figure drawing done at the Art Institute of Chicago for their Early College Program.  This piece was completed with two corresponding works each 25 ½” X 19 ½.”  It took about two (2) hours to complete.
Title:  Last Friday Night
Year: 2012
Dimensions: 25 ½” X  39”
Medium:  Earth Toned Chalk- Pastels
Description:  A figure drawing done at the Art Institute of Chicago for their Early College Program.  The piece was completed with two corresponding works each 25 ½” X 19 ½ “. This drawing in particular was slightly more challenging in the sense that the entire room was entwined with ribbons, balloons along side a figure and a skeleton.  Because of the way that the still life was arranged I decided to draw a view that was both pleasing to the eye and that made the best use of negative space, choosing to embrace the balloons and streamers.
Title:  After Hours
Year: 2012
Dimensions: 25 ½” X  39”
Medium:  Earth Toned Chalk- Pastels
Description:  A figure drawing done at the Art Institute of Chicago for their Early College Program.  This piece was completed with two corresponding works each 25 ½” X 19 ½”. This composition was slightly more challenging than others due to the way in an which the figure was laying.  I completed this work in about two to three hours.
Title: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Year: 2012
Dimensions: 30” X 44”
Medium: Black and white charcoal
Description: This piece was also completed at the Art Institute of Chicago during their Early College Program.  It was a particularly interesting composition to construct due to the large tree that was brought in from a recent storm and placed in alongside the model.  This piece was completed in around three hours.
Title: The Mad Hatter
Year: 2011
Medium:  Pen and Ink with watercolor Pencils
Dimensions: 15” X  12”
Description:  A contour line drawing of a cow skull wearing a tuxedo hat with a  vibrant flower weaving itself through the bone.  While creating this piece it was difficult for me not to be able to go back and correct my mistakes.   From it I learned how to take parts of the piece that I was unhappy with as an artist and use them to my advantage.  In this case I wasn’t too pleased with the back of the head - so I solved my issue by placing a hat on the skull.
Title:  Speak
Year:  2011
Dimensions:  14 ½ ” X 19”
Medium:  Newspaper, oil pastels, watercolor and ink
Description:  A piece inspired by a book that I read in school called “Speak”.  The girl at the top right of the drawing is the model  from class and she also bears a striking resemblance to the main character in the book.  The character is faced with much difficulty trying to find herself and her voice throughout the book.  The tree and leaves found throughout the work depicts the time that passes while the girl searches to find herself.   The word “speak” is a recurring theme in the work and can be found in various places – even the subject’s lips…
This piece won a Scholastic Honorable Mention in 2011
Title:  Transparency
Year:  2012
Dimensions:  15 ½ “X  9 ½ “
Medium:  Watercolor
Description:  The subject for this piece consists of a glass necklace woven around itself.   Like much of my work it is extremely detailed.  It is vibrant and colorful and reminds me of the various facets of art.
