Design for Dementia

People with dementia can struggle to communicate and can become confused, agitated and distressed when they are unable to express their wishes and feelings. This can lead to increased stress and frustration for those caring for the person.

People affected with dementia can keep their remaining healthy brain cells active by recalling stories about their lives and can retain their sense of self if they are given prompts and clues to help them remember.

My brief was to design an effective communication system, tool or process that will foster a calmer and more relaxed environment and improve the relationship between the person with dementia and the carer.

The brief involved repeat visits to care home and dementia support groups in order to carry out research and test ideas, working with staff, carers and people with dementia themselves.

I created Life Luggage. Life Luggage encourages you to manage and securely store your memories. It enables you to store memories in order for others to learn about you. Therefore, your care can be personalised to meet your needs. Communication will improve as your Life Luggage will provide prompts for conversation.

I also created an activity booklet showing how memories can be shared in a care home setting.
