This portfolio for the MICA Competitive Scholarships consists of two series. The first, is a photographic study of liquor stores located in Southern Maryland. The photos were shot at night in order to truly capture the illuminating lights of each store and to isolate the buildings against the darkness of the night. The goal of this project is to give the viewer an isolated sense of each building in order to perceive the differences and similarities of each store separately. The original series consists of 12 photos and each photo was originally printed on 11"x14" photo luster paper.
The second series is titled "Happy Birthday". The intended goal for this series is to capture the bittersweetness of birthdays as we age. For some, getting older means that birthdays become minute, and even dreadful experiences. The bright colors of the objects in their dull, messy environments creates a warped sense of nostalgia. Each photo is digitally stitched together from about 28-38 photos. The series was originally printed on photo luster paper at 24 inches on the short edge.
