Line + Space

In this project we explored line, space, and movement through various studies. We were instructed to create either dynamic or static intervals showing maximum contrast where possible. Each interval had to consist of five to seven parallel black lines in an 8x8 square, while keeping the first and last line in each square black. This project was designed to help develop an awareness of visual elements as a language, expand our knowledge of the basic principals in design, and build confidence in problem solving.
Using the previous studies, we were instructed to add static horizontal line intervals to increase contast and movement.

Using the previous study, we worked toward designing a poster to represent a classical song of our choosing. The song I chose for this poster was “String Quartet No. 15 in D Minor” by Mozart. Allowing for maximum constrast where I could, I focused on angles, repetition, and line density to best represent my song.
For the final poster I used thin lines to represent the delicate piano notes heard in my song and thicker lines to add contrast. Considering my song is mostly piano, I wanted to keep my design clean and simple. I was able to create depth by layering the different line intervals while also representing how an orchestra can have multiple intruments all working together to make one sound. I added sharp angles to further represent the sharp notes and key changes demonstrated in my song.
