Mary Caddick's profile

MICA Competitive Scholarship Spring 2015

All images are Digital 13''x19'' and are what I believe to be the 10 best images from about 85 that I compiled into a book entitled "Mothers". From my time in Ireland during my study abroad experience I got to meet and get to know the Costello family of Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare Ireland. While I spent time in Ireland I felt disconnected, but connected simply because of my Irish heritage. I wanted to find a way to connect to the land and the people further while not losing myself. Meeting and being welcomed into the Costello family's home was the biggest blessing I could have asked for. I was taught traditions both personal and cultural, told countless stories of when "things were different", and was able to learn the ins and outs of their every day. With this family's open arms I was able to work through my feelings of extreme homesickness and my own relationship with my mother. Because the relationship between mothers and daughters are constantly changing and shifting. I found it fascinating to watch and to learn the dynamic of this family, specifically between Finola and her mother Chrissy, and trying to define the line of when whose turn it is to take care of who.
