Coping
a book about aftershock
This book contains paintings that were conceived of during significant events during my life. Through creating this book, it was not only cathartic for me personally, but is also references the trauma we all experience at certain points in our lives. So many of the shocking events we experience are internalized, leaving only haunting shadows of what is remembered. "Coping" is meant to solidify those shadows in an attempt to make sense of them. Each painting is accompanied by a phrase that either I, myself, had said or someone had said to me during the event that is embedded in its corresponding painting. We are able to see ourselves more clearly through the significant and stressful events in our lives. My hope is that "Coping" illustrates that our human hearts are stronger and more compassionate that we expect them to be.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"Mom, I'm having trouble breathing."
"So the doctor called..."
"Well shit."
"Send me a picture of your pretty face."
"She broke his heart."
"I can't believe you're still standing."
"What else am I supposed to do?"
