This concept of blindness originated from wanting to create a collection mainly focused on texture. I was told to use the 5 senses as inspiration. Initially, I was drawn to vision, and how responsive people are to things that have a cool surface. Playing around with this, I came to idea of loss of vision, then braille, which related back to texture.
I began looking at images of what the actual eye looks like with a particular blindness, and began sketching immediately.
Eventually I stumbled upon vision tests that are given to those who are presumed to be developing a blindness. I used the grid of the tests as potential direct translations onto garment ideas.
I even referred back to historical collections and designers such as Valentino and Chanel for silhouette and technique inspiration. I tried to reinterpet this technique to mimic large scale braille.
This- and the following dye samples- are my attempts to create visual impairments on fabric with dye techniques.
