In that first epic incident the woodmen had just found and cut the knotty club from the earth and was returning to camp when confronted by a large boar. In a lucky swing the boar was stunned by a blow to the head and then dispatched by a quick knife thrust. Thereafter the the club became part of the woodsman's kit. Kills were marked by pendants of the various animals that fell to its mercy. Along the way the woodman added a memento mori skull as reminder of his tenuous place in the web.
