Isolation - Evocative Spaces

Insights from Research

Main Entrance Archway
•Larger than life
•Gothic
•Intimidating due to scale, form, texture and color.
•Since it was above eye level we had to look up to it, almost as if in awe

The Trees Outside the Entrance
•Organic form
•Set the mood of the eeriness that we were trying to contradict (specially at the time of the day – 6:00 am)
•Produced heavy shadows on the ground as well at the surrounding trees, giving the road a darker feel

The Trees Aligning the Pathway - ICC
•Tall, Conical trees
•Due to the shape it gave an effect of guarding the graves
•The height of the trees made us look up to them in awe
•The color of the leaves were alternating between yellow and green, making it stand out in comparison to the rest of the space
•One of the first things that catches the eye, setting a more positive feel to the space
The Trees Aligning the Pathway – SPCC
•Tall, Arching Trees
•Arched towards both the pathway and the graves giving the feeling of sheltering them.
•Their organic form and the light falling through the stems and leaves gave an almost magical effect to them.
Memorial Tomb Stone – Landmark
•It was a White structure against a green background making it stand out
•One of the first things you see beyond the gate
•Memorial of the ones who passed away in war
•Being the focal point of the graveyard, with a cross on top: felt like it symbolized presence of god, and sacrifice

The Graves
•There were graves of the children, which due to its size and the age of the child, immediately made us, feel remorse – we empathized with the parents because the worst thing to happen to a human is to see your child die before your eyes.
•A lot of the graves were individualized according to the hobbies and occupation of the deceased; a sailors grave had an anchor imprinted on it while a gardener and musician grave had a guitar imprinted on as well as the top of the grave was plants growing.
•There were separate areas for the graves of the well off and the graves of the middle class people. Those who were rich had good care taken of the graves; while the ones who weren’t, their graves were un kept. Even the form and quality of the tombstone differed with the price paid.
Color Materials and Forms
•The graves were Black, White Granite
•Concrete, mud, red mud, painted in yellows, greens, purples and blues. Colors were pastel, yet vibrant due to the surrounding.
•There were flowers on the graves – marigolds and roses, some garlands
•The milestones along the path and the extrusions marking its boundaries were white and green.
•There was a terracotta-tiled gazebo like sheltered structure in the middle of the crossroads of the pathway.
•The fallen leaves were of different tones and shades of yellow, brown and green.
•There was a contrasting effect of the blooming and decaying flowers.
•There were trees with pink and orange flowers growing on them, we also found some wild white flowers.
•The main pathway was tar while the sub paths were mud.
•The entrance was made on stone bricks with a wrought iron gate.
•The graves were made of colored marble and granite.
•The sculptures were made of cement, white cement or POP.
•Metal crosses on graves.
•Corrugated tin sheets or terracotta tiles on shelters.
Seating and Sheds
•Seating was minimal and only a concrete slab on two concrete blocks (ICC). In SPCC they were granite slabs on cement blocks.
•The sheds were present at the entrance of the gates that did not have the stone structure built. Also present in the central area of SPCC.
•Sheds were made of terracotta tiles or tin sheets with iron poles.
•They had a cooling effect on the area

Lighting
•All natural light except, yellow light for the main gate for dark hours.
•The sunlight was warm and elegant, dancing through the leaves and braches and bouncing off the crosses.
Dogs
•They were very calm and relaxed in the graveyard. This was surprising, as dogs are known to sense supernatural behavior around them.
•They were comfortable resting on and around the graves, the tombstones were cold and probably that was the reason of their pick.
Thought Process

•Isolation
•Hope
•Devastation
•Growth
•Earthy
•Consciousness
•Nature
•Gunpowder

ØGrowth in the middle of devastation in an isolated environment.
Ø A ray of hope, or sign of eternal doom.
ØGunpowder representing destruction and creation at the same time.
Ø The dead bark of the tree giving rise to the life of the plant, almost like life after death.
Ø Natural light shining down at the plant giving a feel of almost the judgment day.
“When you find yourself cocooned in Isolation and despair and cannot find your way out of the emptiness, remember that this is similar to the place where caterpillars go to grow their wings.”
Isolation is always looked upon as a negative environment for one, where as it need not be. It could be a challenge for one to survive and grow stronger becoming undefeated in the harshest of environments. Isolation could be about sensation and imagery, evoking visions, feelings and thoughts.
