Site Plan
A corner shaped terrain is always an unusual place and a challenge for architectonic design. This is why a different solution is required for every different project
This happened in the creating process of Palermo apartment houses. Understanding how to design in the interception of Thames street and Santa Rosa street in relation with the little squares and parks was the clue to success. This allowed the rest of the project requirements to take their own place in a natural way.
Ground Floor Plan - North Elevation - Sketches and Design Process
While studying the possibilities, the apartment became part of the site when its volumes give in to a geometry that fits together with light, texture and landscape topography. The passage you walk coming from Thames street offers attractive views and it was why the wood skin combined to the concrete volumes took the highest part of the creative process. That's why the place suggested us to redirect the public areas, such as the art gallery to the corner, in order to catch up people and re-create the cultural environment of the city.
First Floor Plan - Constructive Detail - East Section -  Sketches
Then, the residential program consisted on 7 apartments that will belong to painters and artists. Each level would consist in three homes developed in one floor. The volumetric design, made of concrete, would dialogue with a system of piled slabs (that becomes the gravity center of each house giving the possibility to separate the public areas to the private ones). Giving, at the end, flexibility and comfort to the residents and, also, the amenity to have a private space to develop its activity in the same place.
Second Floor Plan - Constructive Detail - North Section
The main goal of the project is focused to the tectonic wooden staircase placed on the heart of the lot, conceived as a continuous spine that emerges from the underground. From this point, the vertical circulation gives control light and privacy behind the wooden skin facade and join all the places by communicating them and making direct contact with the different architectural situations such as the ground floor, reception hall and parking car place. Last but not least, it connects each house through a bridge system that allows and gives the chance of recreating and appreciate the poetic dialogue between glass, wood, concrete and steel as a part of the residents life. The interior park generates a warmth place to have fun and interact with the other residents as part of their creative activities.
Third Floor Plan - East Elevation - Exterior Perspective
Palermo complex site appreciate and promotes the participation of artists and painters with the finality of transform the space into a better scenery and also for the way of life expected by them and achieving a comfortable and peaceful environment with other neighboring houses. Architecture takes part into the project bringing out the best in simple and strong spacial conditions that tries to generate high quality rooms that pretend to generate a solid dialogue with the outside by carefully thought windows and wooden skin, where the day light plays a main role finding splendor in wide open spaces.
