My little book of Lanky words n’ tales

This little pocket Dictionary is a treasure trove of the Lancashire Dialect and is easy to use for quick reference due to the books Index section. But it is no ordinary dictionary, as hidden underneath the pages unfolds fictitious conversations between the local residents of Knickerbocker Street. This provides a playful insight into how these words are used in everyday speech. Follow Episode 1 & 2, to reveal the comical antics and daily mishaps of the characters; Jimbo, Tommy, Judith and Nana Stout. In order to portray a more realistic representation of the dialect, the words are spelt as they sound. As a result it may be a fun challenge to read them and can be better understood when read aloud, (when no one is around of course).

So ‘av a laff  and hear yourself sounding like a true local Lanc...

The dictionary begins by defining every day vocabulary used in this region. These words are then used in context, within humorous social interactions between fictional characters in a narrative that runs throughout the book. The purpose of creating the conversations was to accurately portray the true meaning of the slang words and provide for readers an authentic experience of the Dialect and it’s character.
The concept was to create a book that challenged Audio, being in it’s own right as equally effective at conveying dialect. Therefore I created an additional interactive element to the book, providing the reader with a tool to impersonate the Lancashire Accent. Through breaking typographic conventions, legibility and by spelling some of the words according to their pronunciation, the reader is encouraged to sound out the words.
