"Thought and Memory" Huginn and Munnin Illustration

18″ x 24″ pen and ink illustration on 140lb paper.

Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory) are two brother ravens that belong to the Norse god Odin. They are manifestations of Odin himself, flying through the Nine Worlds and returning to Odin’s shoulders at the end of each day to tell him everything they saw and heard.

Huginn ok Muninn
fljúga hverjan dag
Jörmungrund yfir;
óumk ek of Hugin,
at hann aftr né komi-t,
þó sjámk meir of Munin.*

Hugin and Munin
Fly every day
Over all the world;
I worry for Hugin
That he might not return,
But I worry more for Munin.

*Huginn and Muninn poem excerpt from the The Poetic Edda. Grímnismál, verse 20.
