Costume Replica of Etruscan Civilization

Costume Replica of Etruscan Civilization

The project is a part of my college assignment, where we were studying about different civilisation and their costumes
after which people were divided into groups to replicate the costume of a provided civilisation
the one we worked on was Etruscan Civilization

Origin Of the civilisation
Before the Romans developed their long-lasting rule on the Italian peninsula, several other groups of
people organized towns and farms into small-scale societies. These were the most notable and long
lasting pre-Roman society, known as the Etruscans

Inspiration Board for location and costume

Etruscans had well-developed fashion traditions. They brought with them traditions and costumes from ancient Greek, Mesopotamian (centered in present-day Turkey), and Asian cultures, and they developed a thriving culture of their own
They appear to have given more attention to fashion than the Greeks.
Their clothes were made of fine cotton wool and linen

Etruscan men and women were equal
Women enjoyed high status in Etruria and paintings show them prominently in every aspect of life
Inspiration Board for Jewellery

The most striking thing about the Etruscans was the use of jewellery.
The Etruscans developed a  marvelous gold-working technique called granulation
(This involved soldering tiny grains of gold on a smooth background to create a glittering effect)

Sketches of male and female costume

FEMALE COSTUME
Etruscan women in Kolobus-colobium- chiton (Long Tunic) and Himation (Shawl)
Kolobus-colobium with heavy work on its edges

Etruscan woman wore long tunic/tunica decorated on the edges, down to the feet.
It was a common (cotton or linen) gown of Etruscan women.
It was draped and pinned at shoulder with the help of fibula (Etruscan safety pin) & then it was tied with a heavily decorated golden rope around the waist. The edge of the garment was heavily decorated

Etruscan women in Himation (Mantle)

It was a shawl over chiton with colourful heavy work on its edges
Both chiton and himation were dyed in bright colors. Elaborately patterned garments was popular among Etruscan women

Etruscan women in heavy golden jewellery and braided hair

Etruscan women braided their hair into complicated creations and wore their hair elaborately styled
Longer hair worn in multiple braids was very common in the early generations of this civilisation
The later generations tended to arrange the hair on top of the head in a fashion similar to Greek women

Etruscan women gave great attention to their physical appearance. They took great care of their faces and bodies.
They removed their hair with melted wax and took their exercise nude

MALE COSTUME
 Etruscan common man in Tebenna

Tebenna was a distinctive and large cloak. Later it became the standard male Etruscan garment
It was quite similar to the Greek chlamys. It was draped over the left shoulder and then carefully wrapped around the torso under the right arm. It was held in place with various devices, including belts and gurdles
It was  decorated with clavi, (colorful stripes) which broadcast the wearer’s social status or rank

Early Etruscan men commonly wore beardsbut gradually a clean-shaven face became more common
They wore pointed shoes
