Safe Work Australia - Excavation

Safe Work Australia
Excavation Code of Practice illustrations

Here are illustrations I was commissioned to complete to illustrate Safe Work Australia's Code of Practice for Excavation.

As with previous illustrations, isometric projection was chosen for clarity and consistency.
Example of closed sheeting - timber beams and planks arranged in such a way as to brace and support the walls of a trench.
Steel piling - similar to the previous illustration, only the walls are formed by interlocking steel sheets and braced by timber beams - "toms" and "walers" - which are hung from the top edge of the steel piling.

Different colours were used to identify the individual components.

Hydraulically braced soldier rail - where the excavated material and trench walls are more stable, they are braced periodically with vertical steel beams and horizontally positioned hydraulic rams.

Trench shield - steel plates (the lower one with a cutting edge) braced with horizontal hydraulic rams.
Soldier sets are simple timber trench supports when the depth of the trench or the strength of the surrounding earth precludes the need for heavier duty equipment.
Blind spots of various excavation machinery.
