Universal Design - ATM
The ATM has become an important part in everyone’s life. Now-a-days a person having a bank account has an ATM card. Thus an ATM machine design has been made so that people with special need can also use it.
Solutions in the new Design

1. The material used is ABS or poly carbonate with a matte finish. The colour used is grey for a better visibility of the display screen.
2. The room where the machine is kept is closed with a door.
3. From the door to the machine there is a carpet spread which helps the vision impaired person to reach the machine using the difference in texture.
4. The machine has two flat surfaces for the person to keep their wallet or helmet so that it’s easy to take out the card.
5. The flat surface viewed from the top angle looks curved, this helps as a support for a handicapped person to balance with the crutches.
6. The keypad is given in a depth so that the blind person will be able to understand the height difference.
7. Below the card reader is an original card placed so that it is easy for the person to understand which side of the card to be inserted.
8. The card itself has a different texture on one side so that the vision impaired person will be able to find which side to be inserted.
9. Machine has a voice feedback for the visually impaired person.
10. Card once inserted should be taken back so that machine starts responding. This makes sure that no one will forget the card.
11. A green light indicates the card needs to be inserted there. And this will be the only light blinking when the person goes near the machine. This helps in understanding the first task.
12. When the numbers are pressed an audio feedback is given.
13. When a person touches the other button for the options a voice reads out the option for the visually impaired.
14. There are buttons provided near the screen to make it easier for the people to understand the option to be selected.
15. The keys in the keypad is nicely spaced out and is bigger in size which helps in the tolerance of errors.
16. The font size has also been increased so that people with partial vision impairment can also read it.
17. When the money is going to come out there is an indication from the keypad towards the money outlet which helps in giving direction to the person where the money is coming out from.
18. The money outlet indication is slightly embossed helping the vision impaired person to follow to the money outlet.
19. If the money is not taken within one minute it is withdrawn back into the machine.
20. There is ample space provided under the machine so that a wheel chaired person will be able to access the machine.
