Unweaving the Rainbow: Poster and Book Cover

As a two part brief I set out to redesign a full wrap book cover for an academic text as well as a 2 colour screen printed poster. My book of choice was Unweaving the Rainbow by Richard Dawkins, I had previously read the book and been inspired by the poetic and wonderfully visual writing style.
The concept was based on a section of the book that discusses sound waves. Dawkins explains the way that the brain decodes sound and how it can reconstruct it again in the form of imagination and imagery.
"At one level it is all done by a pattern of air pressure waves, a pattern whose richness is first unwoven into sine waves in the ear and then rewoven together in the brain to reconstruct images and emotions." This section of the book really inspired me and the shape I produced is a visual representation of sound entering the ear as a whole noise, being decoded and unravelled by the brain and woven back together as a sound or an image.
I intended to create a minimal design that reflected the books simple yet detailed beauty. I had originally wanted to have the unwoven pattern in a rainbow style gradiant to represent the colour specturm of light. However I chose to change it to a foiled finish that also represents light and vision, how light reflects off of surfaces for us to see, to keep within the colour restraints and to make the design simple and striking.
