Red Road Demolition

Demolition of the last of the iconic landmark Red Road flats in Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday 11th October 2015.

These were the tallest residential buildings in Europe when built in the late 1960s and remained the second tallest inhabitable structures in Scotland (after the Gallowgate twin towers which were recently dismantled floor-by-floor) until their demolition but eventually became troubled with crime, drug abuse and poverty conditions. While structurally sound, extensive use of asbestos around the steel framework in their construction rendered them impractical to renovate (meaning even windows could not be replaced with double glazing) and most of the flats had been left empty for several years before the decision to condemn the buildings.

The top 12-14 storeys of two of the towers remained intact, perched on top of the rubble, after the demolition attempt - testament to the strength of the construction of these buildings.
