In May of 2014, I drove across the country from Raleigh to Oakland with the intention of sharing the stories of individuals and organizations who are taking power into their own hands to provide healthy and sustainable food options for their communities in urban areas commonly known as food deserts, where it’s difficult for low-income residents to find access to healthy or affordable food. After a few months of roaming around the Bay Area, I finally connected with an organization called Growing Together. Since its founding in 2013, Growing Together has been working to develop several food forest ecosystems in underserved neighborhoods in the Bay Area. On September 21st, International Peace Day, I joined them at Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA for the start of their “100 Fruit Trees for Peace” project and continued to document other plantings that followed in communities throughout Oakland.
