Portable Shrines - Tattoos

Degree Project - MA Design for Textile Futures - Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design - London

ABOUT THE PROJECT

As a South American Catholic woman who believes and is enchanted by all rituals performed around my religion, I find in my traditions a never-ending fountain of inspiration to develop my work. I believe that religion is a powerful catalyst of emotions and also an important source of communication between humans.  My head is crowded with memories that are related to different performances around Catholicism and specially, the relationship between women in my family and their beliefs.  From the ritual that my grandmother used to devotedly perform around what she considered the most blessed corner in her house, Portable Shrines is born.  By bringing tradition into the present and future religious practices, I propose portable shrines in the form of prayers as tattoos; slips amulets and shrine-tech bags.

TATTOOS
Lettering Lace©

What I called Lettering Lace© was given life from a meditative exercise by handwriting prayers and my personal approach to the way written prayers are used.  Tattoos for natives of some parts of the world are taken as protection elements, here the connection between the amulet and the tattoo was more than obvious: Tattoos as amulets, prayers as tattoos
