Commissioned by sports website, The Classical, for an article about life on the road in the Western Hockey League written by Chris Collison. The article and illustration were picked up and run on Deadspin as well.
The upper portion is a map of Canada's western provinces, with some of the roads travelled called out. The broken rink is meant to evoke both the Canadian Rockies and a glacier. The lone figure, a hockey player we see from the back, is based on David Caspar Friedrich's "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" which came to my mind when I read Collison's essay; the ennui of the road and the sublime nature of that landscape.
