Layered Paper Mock-up

Layered Paper Art Mock-up
For our demo project in art culture, Hannah and I decided to show everyone how to make layer paper artworks. This is the use of many peices of coloured or blank paper being cut out into various shapes and then pasted on top of one an other to create a sense of depth and give the whole image a "layered feel"
To save time on the day we present, I decided to make a template of pre-cut shapes that will all form the same image.
This is a mock up for a potential image.
Sketch.
This is the initial sketch I did for the project. I knew I wanted to do something simple but also something that would look good when layered together. All of the work I did for this project has been done digitally, and individual shapes will be printed from the digital copies. This enables each shape to be almost identiacal. In the sketch I have drawn many circles. and weird bean shapes that make up the over all form of the fox.
Colour
The next stage was to colour in each individual shape on a sperate layer. Each of these layers will reperesent a seprate cut out shape. Being able to layer the shapes on a digital file makes the actual assembly easier in the final process. Although you can't see the individual shapes without shading, they are all there. When the shapes are all layered together, you can see the image in a whole.
Adding depth.
Even though the digital image doesn't have any literal depth, I wanted to be sure than when the shapes are pasted together, you'd be able to see the depth in the image. the depth is formed by shadows that are created by layering the paper on top of one an other. To get this effect, I went in to each shape, added a masking layer on top, and air brushed in shadows where they would natually lay if this image was a physical object. As you can see, the shadows really add to the illustration.
Adding texture.
As an extra step for myself, I decided to add a paper texture to the whole image to see how much more realistic I could make the digital copy in comparison to the hard copy. To do this I added every layer into a layer group, and then added a texture to the entire layer group. This added the texture to the shadows and each shape.
The layers.
As you can see, there are many layers that will be involved in making this image. Each layer represents a shape that will be pasted together. In total there are 14 seprate layers/shapes. If you look closely, you can see what each individual shape actually is. they are titled correctly and layered correctly for help when assembling the paper version. The only bits of the shape that actually exsist are the coloured bits. the white background behind each shape is actually transparent.
The Program
Although I know behance is a program generally used for adobe stuff, I felt the need to use a program that I am more familure with for this project in order to get the best results. I use Paint Tool Sai when I am doing my concept designs for commissioners. It's very similar to photoshop, but I find it works better for things like illustrations. I added some small little headers saying what each thing does/what its used for.

Thank you :)
