Saint Bruno of Querfurt. Glair tempera, gold, silver and carbon ink on parchment. This was a commisioned work.
St. Bruno died in 1009 and I wanted to stay true to the style and technology of that period. Saint's figure and surrounding furniture draw inspiration from the paintings of Ottonian Renaissance, while the gilded lettering was taken directly from XIth century Codex Aureus Gnesnensis (Golden Codex of Gniezno).
Going for the historic authenticity, I toned down the colors. While later Romaneque painters loved their reds and blues, the palette of Ottonian era is more muted, with secondary colors dominating.
