Pull | Reductive Woodblock Print

The Finished Piece
The Process
Carving out areas where I intended there to be negative space, I leave wood in areas that will be printed. With each layer and cycle of printing, I remove a bit more and use a new color. The end result is a dynamic and colorful illustration.
I roll hand-mixed oil ink onto my board, then press the paper onto it to deposit a layer of color. I do this five separate times for every print in the series.
A progress shot: only two colors.
Final close-up.

This is a reductive woodblock print. Each successive layer of color is created by carving away at the wood and printing on the material left.
