With this poem Whitman endeavours to liberate both the poet and the reader from the limitations of convention by meticulously exploring and emphasizing transcendentalist beliefs, common soul or spiritual state, known only in an individual's intuition which emcompasses and goes beyond the materialistic and physical world.
