Information Architecture - Modernize Navigational Structure

Business Problem: A software developed in the 1990s in Microsoft Access was outdated in a variety of ways. The navigation had grown inconsistently as new features were added. The approach led to the creation of a confusing IA in which users felt lost and frustrated.

The Goal: Develop a user friendly IA that prevents users from feeling lost and scales as new modules and features are added.

Methods Used: Analysis of original navigation, card sort,  wireframing

Outcome: Developed a universal IA that supports universal navigation. Created tabs and grouped related functions under each tab.

Examples of Original Navigation
New Navigation - V1
New Navigation - V2
After implementing the new navigation we realized that the labels were too long and impractical. To fix it, we removed the verbs from the labels and replaced the word database with the common abbreviation DB.
