Disfigured Relations

Disfigured Relations

For me self-image is a very abstract concept. It pulls together ideas of how I would like to look, how I want other people to see me, the images I have based on reflections and pictures of myself, and then the exaggerated images and ideas that make prominent all my perceived flaws. These idealized visions of self, the realistic but still skewed version, and visions that amplify the “imperfections” into a grotesque variation of myself were my inspiration for this body of work. Each collage begins as a drawing, a confrontation with the self-images that are tainted with hate and disgust. The process of creating these collages was difficult for me, but in the finished works I find beauty, peace and relief from the negativity that flooded my self-image.
