Ocean Software Ltd, commonly referred to as Ocean, was a British software development company that became one of the biggest European video game developers and publishers during the 1980s and 1990s, offering a games library containing countless movie-related games of the era, such as Addams Family, Batman, RoboCop and Jurassic Park.
The Ocean logo consisted of large chunky characters, combining the letters A and N in front of a blue gradient sat behind. Each of the letters had a glossy glean to them, contained within a pill-shaped block. There was also a one-colour version of the logo, but as you can see from the image below, its full-colour logo was used more often than not.
Something is to be said for the simplicity of the original marque once you take away all the gloss effects and gradients. However, the use of white space on the predominantly geometric marque hasn't had its potential maximised; especially with the combination of the A and N breaking a potential wave effect across the letters.
Our new marque departs from the large, glossy pill shape of the past and plays up to the geometric shapes of the letter forms, creating a strong wave pattern along the baseline of our typography. The white space between the originally merged A and N also creates a standalone wave marque that can be used on its own for use in mobile games and app icons.
A key part of the Ocean brand was the blue colour spectrum and the large glossy badge. Keeping the vibrant blue of their original palette is key to keeping some of the classic logo and branding alive in this new marque. The treatment of the new logo can also be changed to match the theme and style of the video game it's part of with the use of textures.
