What is Research?

This was also one of our first year projects. For this project we had to respond to the question, ‘What is Research?’. We had to produce a printed broadsheet that communicates the importance of research in relation to Graphic Design and our own working practice. To do this we investigated the ways that we work and the areas of Graphic Design that we are most interested in. For me, this was Branding. Once we had gathered our findings, we needed to create and design an effective way to communicate what we had found. This project made us think a lot about ourselves and the ways that we work as a designer. I found out that I am a Visual Reflector which means I prefer using images and colours. I visualise objects, plans and outcomes. I have learnt that using colour, images and layout are the best ways for me to work.

The broadsheet had to be double sided. So on the front I had information about Branding, and on the back I went into more detail. I particularly like logo design so I focused on that and the pyschology behind the colours used in logos. I used surveys as a form of research to see what different people associated with each colour. I chose to focus on the colour Blue. Colour is one of the most powerful forms of non-verbal communication. I found this side very interesting, I found out that colour conveys meaning and messages, and my research found that colour is a personal preference and it is the visual component that people remember most about a brand.
