About Prairie Typeface
Prairie is a display typeface based on principles of prairie style architecture. Emphasizing horizontal space and flatness through broad characters and gently sloping curves, the typeface is comprised of two weights of wide and narrow capital letters. I designed Prairie as a replacement for the Arts and Crafts inspired typefaces that are associated with the Prairie School but do not reflect the movement’s philosophy and visual language. The font’s OpenType features allow for narrow characters to be used contextually as accents among the wide characters, echoing the architecture of Prairie School buildings and their integration into the flat expanses of the American midwest.
