Each year, more transistors are produced than grains of rice. They are invisible to us, although they change from scratch and increasingly determine our lives. In a collaborative project between the Muthesius Academy of Arts and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT, more than 100 students tasked themselves making this topic visible by art and design. Invisible documents the 16 best and award-winning projects. The publication itself plays with materiality and effects. A blind embossed index on the spine and cover of the book reflects the invisibility of microelectronics. The switch from black and silver paper reminds of the raw material silicon, base of any microelectronics. And finally in order to give the reader a feeling for the clichéd sterile subject and likewise to break that cliché, the book starts from outside to inside with an image gallery of cleanrooms printed on uncoated paper.
